THAT TIME OF YEAR: Spiders are ready to invade homes this autumn

There are believed to be more of them than ever this year, due to the warm summer, which has produced more flies for them to feed on.

“It’s boosted their population – hence 150 million are now on the march indoors as the spider-nesting season starts,” naturalist Malcolm D Welshman said.

Now they are ready to mate, and are heading inside in their search for female spiders.

READY TO MATE: Male spiders are heading indoors to look for females

After a male finds a female’s web, he remains there for several weeks and repeatedly mates with her.

The female then stores the sperm over the winter, allowing her to produce more than ten egg sacs – each containing up to 60 eggs – the following spring.

Simon Garrett, head of Conservation Learning at Bristol Zoological Society, said: “Spiders don’t specifically want to enter your home – in fact, they’d rather stay away as there’s less food and it’s too dry and clean.

“It is the need to mate that changes their behaviour.

“Some will move into a house if there is an entry point for them.”
