During her 65-year reign, Her Majesty has perennially laid the memorial to commemorate the contribution of military and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars and later conflicts.

But this year, the palace has announced that the ceremonial duty has been passed on to Prince Charles, with the Queen watching the ceremony with Prince Phillip from a Foreign Office balcony.

A palace spokesman confirmed: “The Queen wants to be at the Duke’s side.”

‘SACRED DUTY’: Prince Charles will take over laying the wreath

Rumours have swirled as to the reason for the Queen handing over the ceremonial duty, suggesting there is more to it than just wanting to be with the Prince.

Author of “Our Queen” and royal documentary maker Robert Hardman believes the move is part of a gradual process to hand over more power to Charles and the younger generation.

The younger royals were criticised when Prince Phillip retired from royal duties for not doing enough public appearances.

It was revealed that Prince William only worked 80 hours a month at the Air Ambulance and performed less royal duties than his ageing grandad.

But Mr Hardman wrote that Charles and other royal family members will take on duties for Her Majesty.

He also wrote: “She and the Duke are among the last and certainly the best-known members of that heroic generation still active in public life today.

‘HEROIC’: The Queen and Phillip will still be in attendance

“So their absence from the Whitehall line-up will, inevitably, be a source of sadness for many of those in the crowd and watching on television around the world.

“Yet anyone attending this occasion in recent years will have found themselves wondering how much longer it was reasonable to expect two nonagenarians to take part in this parade.”
