THUG: Karl Etherington has been jailed for a string of abusive messages

Karl Etherington, 41, will face 20 weeks behind bars after he threatened to burn down his former partner’s home in messages he sent while drunk.

The heavyweight thug committed the offences while he was already the subject of a suspended sentence for hitting a man in a bar and assaulting a traffic warden by placing a parking ticket on his head.

Etherington, of Blackpool Road, Lancs, admitted sending the messages to his ex before he was jailed.

The court heard the messages came after a row with his ex Vanessa Blundell who wanted to change the surname of the son they had together.

Etherington also sent the abusive messages to the beautician’s mum.

SENTENCED: Karl Etherington was sentenced at Blackpool Magistrates Court

Barrister Julie Taylor told the court: “He admits making the threats but says he would never have carried them out.

“He runs a gym business employing four people and is about to take over a gym at Blackpool Football Club where he again will be employing people.

“He is supportive of his son and pays school fees of £1,000 a month. His new partner is pregnant with his child.”

Etherington will also pay a £115 victim’s surcharge and was slapped with a 12-month restraining order forbidding him to contact his former parter or go near her home or her beauty business.

His legal team said he will appeal the sentence.
