New Caledonia earthquake: Massive 7.0 magnitude quake hits Pacific Latest News

A HUGE earthquake has struck in the Pacific near Australia.

The quake struck close to New Caledonia, the US Geological Survey said.

It hit at a shallow depth of just 9.3 miles (15 km) below the seabed, with the epicentre located 73 miles east of the town of Tadine, on the Loyalty Islands, part of France’s New Caledonia territory.

But incredibly it did not trigger a tsunami warning – despite how close it was to the surface.

The French island cluster falls within the Pacific Ring of Fire – a string of volcanoes around the Pacific Ocean that make it a seismically active area.

The Pacific Ring of Fire has sprung to life in the last couple of months. with numerous intense quakes felt around it.

They include ones in New Zealand, Vanuatu, Japan, Indonesia and Mexico.

The Mexico quake was particularly devastating, with hundreds left dead and widespread damage in the capital.
