North Korea warned ‘massive ground invasion’ will spark ‘bloody war’ Latest News

The communist state has repeatedly infuriated the US by firing ballistic missiles and carrying out nuclear tests.

US President Donald Trump has drawn criticism for threatening to “totally destroy” the secretive nation and has said military options are “on the table”.

Ted Lieu, a Democratic Party representative, has been a vocal critic of Trump’s shoot-from-the-hip approach to the North Korea crisis.

But North Korea is “an absolute danger and threat” whose “ability to kill a lot of people” should not be underestimated, he said.

BLOODY WAR: Ted Lieu has warned of the dangers of war with North Korea

Amid heightened tensions with the totalitarian state, Lieu who served in the US Air Force, said Americans are not fully aware of the costs of war.

Lieu was stationed in Guam – a US territory North Korea has threatened – during the 1990s.

He was regularly involved in military drills preparing US armed forces for war with North Korea.

Lieu, a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, believes a “massive ground invasion” is the only way to locate and destroy North Korea’s nuclear weapons.

“That is an unbelievably bloody scenario,” Lieu said.

“North Korea is an absolute danger and threat, and we need to take its ability to kill a lot of people seriously.”

Lieu slammed Trump for taking an “unpredictable” approach to North Korea, whose leader, Kim Jong-un, he has mocked as a “little rocket man”.

He said Trump’s lack of strategy could lead to “miscalculation” and means conflict is more likely.

AGGRESSIVE: President Donald Trump threatened to ‘totally destroy’ North Korea

“Ten months into this administration, if you ask a very simple and crucial question on North Korea, they can’t answer it: ‘Does the US support diplomacy toward North Korea?’ Right now, no one one knows,” he said.

Defence secretary James Mattis and secretary of state Rex Tillerson have expressed desire to resolve the crisis through diplomatic means.

But last month Trump told Tillerson that he is “wasting his time” trying to negotiate with “little rocket man”.

Lieu has sent a letter to Mattis demanding answers on the expected number of casualties if war with North Korea were to break out.

“Before this administration leads America down the dark, bloody and uncertain path of war with North Korea, the American people and their representatives in Congress deserve answers,” he said.

North Korea is estimated to possess around 60 nuclear weapons.

A report revealed that a North Korea nuclear strike on Seoul and Tokyo would leave two million dead and nearly eight million fighting for their lives.
