Police were called to the service in Omagh, Northern Ireland, this morning.

After cops rushed to the scene, a local councillor said the event was suspended over a suspect device.

Councillor Chris Smyth said: “Suspected device at Omagh cenotaph. Parade suspended. Horrible to think that this could happen.”

Following the arrival of police, he said the event eventually went ahead.

He tweeted: “A bit late starting but parade to the service in OA went ahead. Heads held high, we will not be cowed by terrorists.”

Chief Inspector, Graham Dodds, said the package was deployed delibrately as a means to disrupt the event.

He said: “I would like to reassure the public that we are working hard to make the area safe and that we will continue to provide updates on any impact to today’s event.

“This is a sickening attempt by cowards to create fear and disruption on a day when many gather to pay their respects to the brave men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice and must be unreservedly condemned.”

Reports suggest a controlled explosion was carried out following the scare.
