RETIREMENT: Prince Philip has moved into a cottage at Sandringham

The Duke of Edinburgh has downsized for retirement and moved into a cottage at Sandringham, where he recently arranged to have a new kitchen fitted.

He is now spending his days reading, painting watercolours, writing letters at Wood Farm, and having friends to stay.

“He is enjoying reading things he’s always wanted to read and gets up to what he wants without an equerry telling him he has to be elsewhere, or a camera following him,” an old friend told the Daily Mail.

Phillip’s life at the cottage is with the Queen’s blessing, although she is said to miss him terribly when she is away at Buckingham Palace.

A courtier told the paper: ‘The Queen feels the Duke has earned a proper retirement. She knows him too well — if he was still at the centre of royal life he’d feel he had to be involved. Being at Wood Farm means he’s not too far away, but far enough to be able to relax.”

The couple are set to celebrate their 70th anniversary on 20 November and are believed to still spend plenty of quality time together – including judging a fancy dress party for their staff a few weeks ago, where Wonder Woman won.

When the Queen is back in Buckingham Palace, Philip has a page, housekeeper, chef and footman to keep him company.

Since 1952, Prince Philip has accompanied the Queen on countless royal visits and engagements.

He retired from public duty in August this year.
