Prince Philip and Kate Middleton joined the monarch at the sombre festival at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday.

Each year the event honours the sacrifices made by British and Commonwealth soldiers who fought in conflicts across the globe.

Yesterday, the festival held performances from Alfie Boe, Emeli Sande, Mel C and Lesley Garrett with The Queen’s Colour Squadron and The Band of HM Royal Marines.

But while most royals paid their respects at the event in London the Princes’ absence was noted by some observers.

Will watched Wales go head-to-head against Australia in Cardiff, while Harry cheered England on as they took on Argentina at Twickenham.

England went on to beat Argentina 21-8 despite a poor start, but Wales were seen off by Australia who earned a 29-21 victory.

But royal sources stressed their appearances were royal engagements as they are patrons of the two nations.

The Duke of Cambridge did attend the festival last year, but it is a second time in a row that the ginger royal has missed the event after attending a rugby match at Twickenham last year.

Prince Harry did perform royal duties when he opened the Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey on Thursday.

But at the event the ginger hunk dropped hint of his commitment to Meghan Markle during a conversation with a former veteran.

While chatting to Matt Weston, a bomb disposal expert who lost both his legs when a planted device exploded in Afghanistan, he was asked where his US actress girlfriend was during the Remembrance event.

The 28-year-old said: “I took the Mickey and asked where his missus and he said she wasn’t here.

“I asked if she would come next time because she’s awesome, and he said he couldn’t hide her anywhere, but I said you wouldn’t have to hide her.”
