ORDERS: People exceeding a set limit will be turned away from shops

Police gave the drink detectors to a city’s store workers as part of a trial – and ordered them to turn away anyone over the limit.

Officers launched the crackdown on drunken thugs tearing through the streets after complaints about spiralling levels of public boozing.

But Rohat Hamed, who manages a corner shop in Cardiff city centre, now claims the new devices are a lifeline for her workers.

She said: “We just grab it and if anybody who tries to buy alcohol looks drunk we tell them to blow into it.

“Some people have given us abuse when we use it because they must think that they’re above the law.”

Rohat has splashed out on one to use all the time.

She added: “We ended up buying it from the police for £200 because we have got a lot of problems.”

Rohat, 40, is desperate to stamp out the problem with drinkers who regularly meet by her shop.

She also fears large groups of drunks in the streets could drive tourists from the city.

Divisional Commander for Cardiff, Chief Supt Belinda Davies, said: “Such behaviour can prove unpleasant and unwelcoming to those visiting or working in the area.”
