Surfing news: Brit breaks back in 12 places after MONSTER wipe-out Latest News

BRITISH surfer Andrew Cotton broke his back during a horrifying wipe-out while riding a monster wave off the coast of Portugal.

Footage shot from the shore shows the 36-year-old taking on the beastly swell, sliding down the face of the 50ft beast during an exhilarating ride.

But his joy turned to pain moments later as a wall of foaming white water crashed down on top of him.

He disappears from view for a second, before his body spat out of the front of the wave and rag-dolled under the surface.

Cotton – a famed big-wave rider who holds the record for the biggest wave ever surfed – was rescued and placed on a spinal board before being rushed to hospital.

The smash, which happened near notorious big-wave surf spot Nazare, left him with 12 broken vertebrae in his back.

He said: “I jumped off my board – I very rarely do that.

“I just hit the eject button and thought, f*** I gotta get out of this.

“Then a whole world of pain happened.

“I’m pretty good at falling off and have had a lot of wipeouts but this time I remember feeling a weird sense of weightlessness I’ve never felt before which must’ve been when I was flying through the air.”

Thankfully, he is expected to make a full recovery as he paid tribute to those who helped rescue him.

“Thank you to all the lifeguards and crew on the beach who helped stabilise me and do a great spinal recovery,” he continued.

“I can’t name everyone but you all did your bit to get me safely to the hospital.

“I’m already looking forward and focusing my energy to get fit and back out there on some more big rollers!”
