Texas church shooting: Trump breaks silence on Devin Kelley motive Latest News

Devin Patrick Kelley, 26, has been identified as the shooter who stormed the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs and opened fire with an assault rifle during mass.

Detectives still have no idea why Kelley, a married Bible study teacher, committed mass murder in the small town church in San Antonio, Texas.

Joe Tackitt, Wilson County Sheriff, told CNN: “We don’t think he had any connection to this church. We have no motive.”

But this morning Trump has revealed his theory when asked what may have caused Kelley, a former US Air Force member, to target the church.

VERY DERANGED: Trump believes the Texas shooter had ‘mental health problems’

Speaking during his 10-day tour of Asia, Trump responded to a question about gun control in the wake of the shooting – one of the deadliest in modern US history.

Trump dismissed the issue of gun laws, telling reporters this “isn’t a guns situation” and the gunman had a “mental health problem”.

“Mental health is your problem here,” Trump said at a press conference in Tokyo, Japan.

Having seen “preliminary reports”, Trump said, the shooter was “a very deranged individual”.

“A very, very sad event, but that’s the way I view it,” Trump said.

Kelley, of New Braunfels, San Antonio, has been described by police as a young white male who was dressed in military fatigues and a bullet proof vest.

“This act of evil occurred as the victims and their families were in their place of sacred worship,” he said.

“We cannot put into words the pain and grief we all feel and we cannot begin to imagine the suffering of those who lost the ones they love.”

The death toll is expected to rise with a two-year-old girl, a pregnant woman and a 14-year-old girl among his victims.
