INDUSTRIAL ACTION: The strikes will hit commuters today and on Thursday

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union are staging a 24-hour walk-out from today in a bitter row about staffing and controversial driver-only trains.

The strikes – today and Thursday –will affect train services run by Southern, Merseyrail, Arriva Rail North and Greater Anglia.

However, Greater Anglia has assured passengers it is planning to run a full service on the strike days, while Southern announced there will be a normal service on most of its routes.

But Arriva Rail North said it can only run 1,200 services – just 46% of its normal timetable.

Merseyrail said between 7am and 7pm, most of its services will run with a break scheduled in the middle of the day.

Members of the drivers’ union Aslef are also set to strike on Thursday.

Transport for London (TfL) has warned commuters there will be widespread disruption after last-minute talks yesterday failed to stop the walk-out from going ahead.

The 24-hour strikes coincide with the Conservative Party’s annual conference in Manchester.

The RMT is balloting guards and drivers over strike action as part of an escalating row over the operation of doors on trains by guards.
