COMMUTERS are facing travel hell today as workers from numerous train companies go on strike.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) at Southern, Merseyrail, Arriva Rail North and Greater Anglia are staging a mass walk-out today.

The strikes threaten to create commuter chaos as services are cancelled and people look for alternative travel arrangements.

The industrial action was organised in a row over driver-only trains – something RMT says will impact passenger safety.

The RMT has accused Southern of “bullying”, alleging the rail company threatened to target the pensions of striking staff.

“Outrageous threat to their staff pensions that is pure bare-faced bullying”

Mick Cash, RMT

General secretary Mick Cash said: “Southern Rail, a company that earlier this year encouraged passengers to ‘strike back’ against frontline staff, has once again dredged the depths of industrial relations with this outrageous threat to their staff pensions that is pure bare-faced bullying.

“If Southern seriously think that RMT will lift the campaign for safe and accessible rail services for all on the basis of threats and intimidation then they should think again.”
