SHOCK: Two 14-year-old boys are being quizzed about planned terror attacks

Officers detained the teens on suspicion of “preparing for an act of terrorism” in coordinated raids on houses two miles apart in Northallerton, North Yorks.

The swoops followed reports of threats to the safety of staff and pupils at the local secondary school.

Locals said police doing house-to-house inquiries had told them they were examining Street View grabs on computers seized during their searches.

Forensic officers were yesterday examining a nearby disused tyre garage with a blue metal shuttered door which locals said children had been using as a skatepark.

A neighbour of one of the suspects said 10 police cars descended on Saturday on the house where the boy lives with his brother and dad.

TERROR: The small town of Northallerton was swamped with police quizzing inhabitants

“Officers believe that this is an isolated incident and the wider community are not at risk”

North Yorkshire Police spokesman

”It was a very big operation and they appeared to be searching the house, the garage, the garden and a Peugeot car,” he said.

”There have been some problems with the kids yelling abuse and causing problems and noise in the street.

”There has been some abusive language.”

Neighbours said the siblings had been arriving home unaccompanied by taxi from school.

Four police cars and a van were involved in the swoop on the second suspect’s house in a nearby village.

TERROR: The two boys will be held for questioning until Wednesday

A neighbour said: ”It was a big police operation and it went on for quite a while so we knew it had to be something serious.

”But this is the last place you’d expect anything to do with terrorism.”

A spokesman for the police’s North-East Counter Terrorism Unit said they had been granted permission to continue questioning the two boys until tomorrow (wed).

”Both boys were arrested as part of an ongoing police led investigation on suspicion of preparing for an act of terrorism contrary to Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006,” he said.

”Since the weekend searches have taken place at a number of locations in the Northallerton area.

”These include searches at three residential properties which have now concluded.”

SWARMING: Witnesses said they saw police gathered around this garage

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: ”Officers believe that this is an isolated incident and the wider community are not at risk.

”We appreciate the cooperation of local residents whilst the investigation continues.”

A spokesman for North Yorkshire County Council said Northallerton School was “supporting the police in their investigation”.

”Police continue to investigate with an open mind to establish what, if any, offences have been committed,” he said.

”The school understands that parents and carers may have concerns as a result of these arrests.

”We would like to reassure them that the safety of the school is paramount and we are working with the police to support our students and prioritise their safety at all times.”
